Until then, best regards,

Loreau

“Are you going to meet him?” I asked.

“How can I not? If the man is willing to make himself available to me, I certainly have a few things to say to him,” Monty said, the gleam returning to his eye. “It’s a very public place, so I needn’t fear an ambush. And I’ll have that with me,” he said pointing to the revolver lying on a low table. “I suppose I should give it a name,” he said, picking it up and turning it over in his hands. “Beautiful and deadly, like a woman. How about Gisel?”

“I like it,” I said. “And I shall bring my Bowie knife, which I shall call Bowie.”

“All the same, my dear fellow, I think you should keep your distance,” Monty said as he lit a cigarette. “This meeting should be just between myself and Loreau. I want him to be as candid as possible, and your presence might put him off. You find a bench a ways off while I meet with him. Of course, I’ll give you a full account afterwards.”

15.

The following day, Thursday, we found ourselves in the Tuileries at noon. There were quite a lot of people milling about, young lovers, old couples and families with small children, and from my spot some ways from the octagonal pond Monty popped in and out of view.

Finally, he found his man and they sat down in two rented chairs by the water. Loreau was dressed in a black wool tail coat with peaked lapels semi-faced in silk, black wool trousers and a white silk waistcoat. His hair was jet black with a mustache to match. The two men spoke in a sedate manner for some ten minutes. Finally Loreau stood and, with what looked from my perspective to be an affable air, shook Monty’s hand and left. After he’d faded from view, I came and sat in his seat.

“Well?” said I.

“He came straight to the point and asked me what I wanted of him. I told him frankly that I wanted some form of revenge for the death of my friend. He expressed remorse for it, and assured me that he had nothing to do with it, that Bertinaux was a psychopath who’d acted on his own volition. As a show of good fellowship, he even offered to allow me to join the Order of Trithemius ... and I accepted.”

“You what?!” I was genuinely shocked. Had my friend’s head been turned? And so easily?

“Don’t misunderstand me,” he said, reading my expression, “I have no intention of falling in with that man. I’m only pretending to along with his ploy to buy my silence by binding me to the Order. He’s not buying me; I’m buying time.”

He gazed at the water for a moment, then added, “He even invited me to what he called a special gathering tomorrow night. At midnight.”

“You mean ...?”

“It has to be. The sex rite. I’m thinking he’ll use it as an opportunity to gauge my response, to see if I’m truly willing to fall in with his level of depravity.
